2nd folding kayakers weekend @ Lower Seletar !
A rare paddle this is as it seems only Seletar Country Club members can paddle there. We had to get permission from no less than 3 agencies - the country club, the canoe federation, and the water department. Henry from the canoe federation helped a lot - thanks Henry !
That day we happened to paddle into 2 natural and 1 'unnatural' events.
There were thousands maybe millions of snails' eggs everywhere. Clumps of pink eggs were perched on branches, leaves, barrels, shores, rocks, just about any rough surface you will find these eggs. Carlos was pleasently amused calling the event 'an orgy out there!"
One thing must lead to another. The water was perceptibly green and it was apparent that there was an algae bloom! So it was obvious that free food was the cause of this free romp by the snails.
And these snails are fantanstic algae eaters! Fish farms have them in ponds to eat up the algae. But they are also fantastic breeders!
There was also an explosion of water plants growth apart from the algae. Sometimes the paddle got stuck in these plant growth. Mechanized boats were plying up and down harvesting the water plants, probably to reduce it. More growth and they could suffocate the animal life. I wondered what caused the explosive growth.
And what was just unnatural? See what Paul has for his kayak flotation bag! High time manufacturers take notice that we kayakers are sensitive souls who want more than bland designs!
